110. Wellington (Arthur Wellesley, first Duke of, Field-Marshal, 1769-1852) Autograph Letter signed to Sir Charles Stuart, 6pp., 4to, Celonio, Portugal, 3rd August 1810, on Portugese politics, "My opinion in respect of the Portugese Govt. has been invariably the same. That Govt. alone can rule the Country at all which the Prince Regent has named. I recommend therefore that the Conde de Redondo & the Principal lawyer & the Doctor should now be called to the Regency for the same reasons that I recommended before that the Condé de Redondo should not be asked to the Regency without the Prince'[s authority. In respect of yourself you can no more accept the Office of Regent without the King's consent than I could that of Com-in-Chief or Marshal General without the King's authority; but notwithstanding the additional trouble it may throw upon you I do most anxiously... entreat you to advise the King's Govt. to give his Majesty's consent & your acceptance of this Office, & your holding it with the Office of the King's Minster at Lisbon", folds, browned.
