157. Scott ( Sir Peter, ornithologist, conservationist & artist, 1909-89) Small pen and ink sketch of wildfowl flighting over a lake, signed "Peter Scott. Lieutenant RNVR", 13th March 1941 [ with ] Autograph Letter signed to Kathlyn Leonard, 2pp., 4to, HMS Broke, 10th March 1941, "This is a queer change from being a painter but I like it all the same, though this ocean can be a cheerless place at times. Today the sea is cold & grey & there are little bars of fierce black ripples where an angry wind tears at the mountainous slopes of the waves. It whips the tops off in a flurry of white & blows the spray into a smokey mist over the whole surface of the sea. A thin sun shines out bleakly on the menacing scene & our slim ship shudders as the great rollers pick her up & throw her down again. The white rushing water sweeps hissing over the deck, swirling round the depth charge traps & cascading back overside. One can make light or heavy weather of this destroyer life & both with equal justification, for the way one looks at it is all that matters. It is full too of minor comforts - like a hot cup of cocoa on the bridge, or an hour or two of sleep when you are tired, & of good companionship & friendship, & of the satisfactions of getting a job done, & seeing other people doing their jobs well. So its all up to one'self whether one loves or loathes it", folds, a few words slightly dampstained , in an autograph album; other autographs & letters including: Henry Cotton, Val Gielgud, Peter Cresswell, Cecil Trouncer, Brian Lawrence, Frederick Grisewood, signed photographs including: Rex Harrison, Ivor Novello, Arthur Askey, Lilli Palmer, Basil Radford, George Curzon, Wilfred Pickles, many loose, original leather, oblong 8vo, 1930s - 40s.
